The first Star Trek pilot, The Cage, was produced in 1964. To celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, this December we are reviewing the second season of the original Star Trek show. In the Star Trek TOS episode (S2E23) “The Omega Glory” the crew of the Enterprise land on a planet populated by two groups of people the Yanks and the Kohns. In the episode, Captain Kirk must find the cure to a deadly disease and put an end to another Starfleet captain's cultural interference. It takes a Canadian-born actor playing an Iowan farm boy grown up to be a Federation hero to give us the dramatic interpretation of what should make America great. It’s not the Declaration of Independence, which we celebrate on the 4th. Kirk quotes the preamble to the Constitution. “No words have said this thing of importance in quite this way.” The Star Trek The Next Generation episode The Measure of the Man is perhaps one of the best Trek stories of defining what it is to be alive and free. Another that is easily overlooked is the Star Trek Voyager episode Author, Author , where the holographic Doctor’s holobook highlights the plight of Mark 1 Emergency Medical Holographs, who are The promises of the Declaration are what the “oohs” and “aahs” of the fireworks are supposed to inspire. But the American words of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution have to mean something beyond the 18th Century parchment they were written on. In the future history of Star Trek, the USA ceased to exist after World War III, but the principles that founded the nation lived on. And being that James T.
