Greenlandic independence (Greenlandic: Namminersulivinneq) is a political ambition of some political parties (such as Siumut, Inuit Ataqatigiit, Naleraq, and Nunatta Qitornai), advocacy groups, and individuals of Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, to become an independent sovereign state. Greenland has been a part of Denmark for 600 years although its people now govern their domestic affairs. After six years of work, the world’s biggest island has finally unveiled a draft of its constitution. Greenland gained autonomy from Denmark in 1979, but the former colonial power still has Greenland is holding a national election on March 11 that will largely serve as a referendum on the government’s approach to securing independence from Denmark. Under the act, Greenland can achieve full independence via a referendum with approval from the Danish Parliament. In April 2023, a constitutional commission presented Greenland’s parliament, "The general understanding is that it would be possible to give away part of the country, or for Greenland to become independent, without a constitutional amendment and without changing the Danish constitution," Frederik Waage, a professor at the University of Southern Denmark, told AFP. Denmark's prime minister on Wednesday told Donald Trump that it was up to Greenland to decide on its independence, following the US president-elect's remarks about taking control of the island, the prime minister's office said, as per a report. In a statement, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's Greenland National Day (Greenlandic: Ullortuneq; Danish: Grønlands nationaldag) falls on 21 June and is the day of Greenlandic national identity. The day was introduced by the former Home Rule in 1985, and it was on this date that Greenland gained self-government in 2009. Greenland Prime Minister Múte Egede announced a desire to obtain independence from Denmark in the wake of President-elect Trump’s comments about buying the island territory. Independence was the most important issue of the election. [3] The government declared in February 2024 that independence was its goal. [4] At a press conference in early 2025, pro-independence prime minister Múte Bourup Egede said that "work has already begun on creating the framework for Greenland as an independent state" and apparently hinted that an independence referendum could take Greenland may become independent if its residents want, but is unlikely to become a US state, Denmark's foreign minister said on Wednesday after US President-elect Donald Trump refused to rule out force to take control of the Arctic island. Greenlanders have been ambivalent about the U.S. interest. There was appreciation for the protection that Americans provided during World War II and in the first few post-war years—protection which offered the country its first opportunity to declare full independence. Origins of National Day National Day is a bit different from Independence Day as it is celebrated in Iceland only 4 days prior. Although Greenland has Home Rule, which means that it has a considerable amount of self-determination, Greenland holds the status of a parliamentary representative democratic dependency, and the King of Denmark is Head of State. Photo: Mads Pihl Greenland was a colony of Denmark until 1953. It remains part of the kingdom, but in 2009 it gained autonomy with the possibility of self-government and independent choice in domestic politics. In 2019, a series of publications appeared in the media that Trump was considering buying Greenland. Following a vote in which 76% voted in favor of self-rule, Greenlandic citizens, along with diplomatic representatives from 17 countries, met at the harbor in capital city Nuuk to declare Greenland’s first step in gaining its independence from Denmark and achieving world recognition as the new nation of Naalakkersuisut, its Inuit name. Once the Act on Greenland Self-Government was passed on National Day 2009, Greenlandic became the official language, and Greenland assumed responsibility for the administration of its justice, labor, and finance. Crucially, the act also opened the door to possible negotiations for Greenland’s independence. In addition, June 21 is the summer solstice and thus the longest and brightest day of the year. In Greenland, we celebrate National Day with festivities in all towns and villages.
