In 1997, the 64 residents of Eigg decided to rule the island themselves by means of a community buyout, raising money from a public fundraising campaign that resulted in 10,000 contributors and a very generous anonymous sponsor. A stone monument commemorates the day of independence. Since that day, Eigg’s has population grown and the island now thrives as a beacon of community empowerment and environmental action.
